Paros, Crete, Santorini, Mykonos, Milos, Naxos, Folegandros (to name a few) – the Cycladic Islands in Greece have been a hot spot for years now, and for good reason. Yes they are touristy, but as the saying goes, they are touristy for a reason.
The Aegean Blues, the white washed buildings, the local fisherman’s’ boats with fresh catch of the day, and of course the stunning beaches – all make for a seductive setting that would lure any traveler. The food is to die for – Mediterranean at its finest – and you can stuff yourself silly without feeling all the guilt because it is so fresh and healthy.
For those seeking varied adventure, Crete is a large island and offers a ton of adventurous and historical activity – hike the island’s beautiful gorges; take a boat excursion that includes Spinalonga, the famous island of the lepers; take a day trip to Balos; and explore Knossoss Palace – just some of things you can do on this diverse island.
Paros has become increasingly popular and I would say most of my clients choose to include it in their itineraries. The town of Naoussa is picture-perfect and lively with its plethora of restaurants and boutiques. A short boat ride away is Antiparos, ideal for exploring another island town and its surrounding coves. Beaches, boating and town life make this island special.
For those that want a more quiet vibe, Milos – with its gorgeous beaches and scenery – has become the spot to go to for a less touristy scene. Pristine and rustic, people who want to feel a more secluded Greek island experience love Milos. If you are a foodie lover, then you can’t miss Naxos – this agriculturally rich island has some of the best food in Greece. Beach life, a relaxed atmosphere and good food are what draw people to this lesser known island.
Mykonos, known as the “party” island, is famous for its beach clubs (and a lot of them too), but has become more and more family-friendly. There are certainly hotels that cater to families, and some that are certainly more for adults! The town of Mykonos, with its blue and white washed architecture and cobblestone, is one of the prettiest Greek island towns.
Santorini is a much debated island, due to the crowds from the cruise ships that come to see the magnificent views from the caldera. Why so many people? Because it is absolutely stunning and unique. The island is a volcanic crater with a massive cliff, with hotels and shops built into the crater. To see the white washed buildings carved into the landscape, set against the Aaegean sea – there is nothing like it. For those that visit Santorini for the day, it can seem way too crowded. But for those that stay overnight, especially on the caldera, you retreat down to your private space with an incredible view, away from the people and white noise, and it is truly one of the most special and serene experiences to be had.
To get a Santorini-esque experience in a less crowded setting, head to Folegandros. Rugged, dramatic, and quiet, this island is beautiful, serene and peaceful. The Chora is its “caldera”, with bougainvillea charmed streets and incredible views. This is where you go to truly get away from it all and have your slice of Greek heaven without the tourists.
