Covid Update:
Storm King opens Wednesday, July 15 to the general public in the form of limited, timed-entry tickets, and on a first-come, first-served basis. See here for more information, and to reserve tickets.
One of our favorite places to go where the kids can really fun free, all the while viewing incredible art in the form of sculpture, is Storm King Art Center. Like many families we know who have been, we absolutely love it here.
Located in the lower Hudson Valley about an hour north of New York City, Storm King is one of the world’s premier sculpture parks, with over 100 sculptures and installations sited across 500 acres of fields, hills and woodlands. It is a place where everyone can enjoy, and all ages. I have been going since my 20’s and now that I have kids, it has been so great to take them to a place that has inspired me for so long.
Not only is the landscape beautiful, set against the backdrop of both Storm King and Schunnemunk Mountains, but the sculptures you see, both large and small scale, are by many of the world’s most acclaimed artists, including Alexander Calder, Louise Bourgeois, Sol Lewitt, Maya Lin, Henry Moore, Richard Serra, the list goes on. And my personal favorite, Andy Goldsworthy, who’s rock wall entitled “Storm King Wall” seems to go on forever…his work never seizes to amaze me.
There is so much to see, both art and nature wise, one can spend all day here. And if you want to take a break from the outdoors, especially if it’s hot out, there is also Museum Building, which contains sculptures as well. Additionally, Storm King offers a variety of classes, and if you are looking for an activity to do with your child, during summer and fall hours they offer a hands-on program every Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
It has become tradition for us to go about once every season (except winter, when it is closed). Whether you have children young or old, all will be lured by Storm King’s majestic setting, with its world-class sculptures beautifully curated to mix in with the landscape. It is the ideal day trip from New York City and a must visit!
